Forensic Friday!!!!! Many of you asked for spontaneous human combustion (SHC) so here ya go! SHC is the theory that a body seemingly spontaneously engulfs in flames burning the head and torso almost completely to ashes while leaving the extremities fairly intact. Also, other objects in the room (which should be flammable) for example the chair the person was sitting in, also does not burn up in flames. This photo is about as real as the theory of spontaneous human combustion. It does NOT exist. Much time and research has been wasted trying to disprove this “cause of death”. Since there have not been a ton of these cases reported, they have all been examined. Almost all victims were found to be chronic alcoholics and/or immobile, obese or incapacitated in some way. It seems to predominantly occur in women. A source of ignition was always found (ex cigarette or cigar). It only occurred indoors and oily coating was also always found on the walls and the ceilings in these cases. Having done many autopsies on chronic alcoholics I know their tissues are absorbed in alcohol, to the point where you can smell it as soon as you open their body. This combined with a person who is obese, immobile irresponsive (due to ex heart attack) and close enough source of ignition can cause them to catch fire. The fire burns off the clothes with a limited amount of oxygen within an indoor space and the body begins to smolder, feeding off the fat that it melts. This is known as the wick effect and is similar to a wick within a candle. This smoldering fat is what is the oily covering that covers the walls and ceilings in these cases. The smoldering is thought to stop at the extremity joints because of the decrease in fat at these areas. The smoldering can get to very high temperatures which can actually burn the bones away. Sorry if I disappointed you, but this theory has been disproven!!!
